Do you like watching movies where the main character is introduced in the opening scene as a child, and in the next scene He is an adult on a mission to save the world? Well, that is what happens between yesterday’s reading and today’s. The life of Christ can be seen in glimpses throughout the Gospels, but Matthew is setting the stage to reveal Jesus as the Son of God and Savior of the World.

“The prophet Isaiah was speaking about John when he said, “He is a voice shouting in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord’s coming! Clear the road for him!’” (‭‭Matthew‬ ‭3‬:‭3‬ ‭NLT‬‬)

The name Jesus was a popular name at the time of Christ. The name means salvation, and there is no doubt, the world was looking for a savior. Matthew is writing to establish the Messiah. What evidence can we find in these first three chapters? How effectively does Matthew build the foundation for his case?

“But Jesus said, “It should be done, for we must carry out all that God requires.” So John agreed to baptize him. After his baptism, as Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and settling on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.”” (‭‭Matthew‬ ‭3‬:‭15‬-‭17‬ ‭NLT‬‬)
