Do you ever do anything randomly or without purpose? Students in my classroom on a daily basis react to something I’ve said with, “Well, that was so RANDOM!” Truthfully the statements are never unplanned. The perceived randomness is to inspire a search for connections.
Chapter 6 of Matthew, Jesus is teaching aspects of a devoted life — One that honors God and serves others. The broad stroke heading: Giving to the Needy, Prayer and Fasting, Money and Possessions. Have we ever stopped to ask, “What’s the connection Jesus is revealing here?”
“Give your gifts in private, and your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.” (Matthew 6:4 NLT)
“But when you fast, comb your hair and wash your face. Then no one will notice that you are fasting, except your Father, who knows what you do in private. And your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.” (Matthew 6:17-18 NLT)
“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” (Matthew 6:33 NLT)
Consider these passages today. Was Jesus randomly tossing out thoughts? Are we able to connect the thoughts as we live our lives — Honoring God and serving others!
