Mark is the shortest and most dramatic of the four gospels— it moves fast! There’s no long introduction—just action. Jesus is baptized, tempted in the wilderness, calls His disciples, drives out demons, heals the sick, and preaches the good news—all in one chapter. It’s a whirlwind. But one thing stands out: urgency.
The first words Jesus preaches are, “The time has come. The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!” There’s no delay, no hesitation. The time is now.
That makes me think—did I ever live with that kind of urgency? When did I forget that God’s kingdom isn’t just some future reality but something happening now? Do I put off what He’s calling me to do, assuming I’ll get to it later? Do you?
Look at how the disciples respond. Jesus calls Peter, Andrew, James, and John, and they drop everything—immediately. No excuses, no “Let me think about it,” just obedience. Would I do the same? Or would I hesitate, caught up in my comfort and plans?
And then there’s Jesus Himself. He’s constantly moving, teaching, healing, and serving, yet He never loses sight of what matters. Before sunrise, He slips away to pray. Even in His urgency, He prioritizes time with the Father. How often do I get so busy that I forget to do the same?
Mark 1 challenges me. Jesus is calling, the time is now, and I have a choice. Will I follow Him wholeheartedly, or will I hesitate?
Lord, help me not to delay when You call. Give me a heart that responds immediately and the wisdom to seek You first in everything. Amen.
What about you? Is there something God is calling you to do right now? How will you respond?
