Wow, We are beginning the year 2025! Growing up I thought, “Jesus was coming back ANY DAY — everyday!” I never thought I’d make it out of my teens. Who would have guessed, we’d still be here on Earth in 2025? Now I’m a year away from retirement. So, Happy New Year, and may we continue to experience the blessings God has in store for us as we open and reexamine the New Testament.
Every time we open the Bible, we should approach God’s word seeking new insight, deeper faith, and renewed strength. Take a few minutes before you read today and approach the Throne as a seeker.
How many of us would admit that we skip the genealogies? But here in Matthew chapter one we find Jesus’ family tree. Have you ever looked back over the generation to discover who is in your own family tree? What’s the importance of those individuals? How do their stories shape and define our journey?
The discovery is in the details. When we come across these parenthetical references, think “Now it’s getting interesting.” The references point our attention to specific people used in God’s plan of redemption: (whose mother was Tamar), (whose mother was Rahab), (whose mother was Ruth), (whose mother was Bathsheba, the widow of Uriah), (born at the time of the exile to Babylon).
“All those listed above include fourteen generations from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the Babylonian exile, and fourteen from the Babylonian exile to the Messiah.” (Matthew 1:17 NLT)
Once the interesting details catch our attention, we can make the leap into the miraculous! Are we preparing to make the leap? Happy New Year, and may it be the year we leap into the miraculous!
