Our reading today opens with a series of parables: What is the focus and message of those stories? Who is Matthew attempting to influence? More importantly, why is Jesus using parables?

“And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith.” (Matthew 13:58 NIV)

Matthew concludes this chapter with a sobering moment: Jesus, the Son of God, returns to His hometown of Nazareth, but His ministry is met with skepticism and unbelief. Despite His wisdom and miraculous power, the people who had known Him as a boy couldn’t reconcile the carpenter’s son with the Messiah. Their familiarity with Jesus blinded them to His true identity, and as a result, “He did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith.”

This passage invites us to reflect on how our faith—or lack of it—impacts our relationship with God. Faith is not just about believing in Jesus’ ability to perform miracles; it’s about trusting Him fully, even when we don’t understand His ways.

Are there areas in your life where doubt or skepticism has crept in? How might those doubts be limiting the work God wants to do in and through you?
How does familiarity with Jesus—perhaps from growing up in the church or hearing the same stories repeatedly—affect your ability to trust Him deeply?
What would it look like for you to approach Jesus with fresh faith and an open heart?

The people of Nazareth missed out on experiencing the fullness of Jesus’ power because of their unwillingness to believe. Their preconceived notions about Him—rooted in their familiarity—created a barrier to the miraculous. Could we be doing the same in our own lives?

Sometimes, our faith falters because we focus more on our circumstances than on God’s promises. Other times, we become so comfortable with our routines that we stop expecting God to move in extraordinary ways. But Jesus reminds us throughout the Gospels that even a small amount of faith—like a mustard seed—can unleash His power.

What if we chose to set aside our doubts and familiarity today? What if we approached God with childlike faith, trusting Him to work in ways that exceed our expectations? Jesus made the way!

Father, God, forgive us for the times we have allowed doubt, skepticism, or familiarity to limit our faith in You. We confess that we sometimes overlook Your power and presence because of our preconceived notions. Help us to trust You wholeheartedly, believing that You are able to do far more than we can imagine. Open our eyes to see You afresh and soften our hearts to receive Your truth. Strengthen our faith, Lord, and help us to live with expectant hearts, ready to see Your miraculous work everywhere—in our homes, churches, work environments, EVERYWHERE Lord. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
